To mark National Apprenticeship Week 2023, EDF Renewables UK is unveiling its new apprenticeship scheme alongside the creation of various graduate roles, propelling candidates onto the renewable energy career ladder.

There are opportunities based right across the UK, with positions combining both academic and crucial hands-on experience.

With renewable energy continuing to be a high-growth industry and one with endless career opportunities, now is an ideal time for individuals passionate about acting against climate change and creating a low carbon energy system to join EDF Renewables UK in accelerating a net-zero future.
Building on the success of its Wind Turbine Apprenticeship scheme launched in 2020, EDF Renewables UK is looking to recruit apprentices in health, safety and environment and electrical engineering. As part of the scheme, apprentices will spend a proportion of their time at North Tyneside College, before learning the practical elements of the job across various EDF Renewables UK sites learning about a range of technologies.

Matthew Moran, from Northumberland, who is based at the Durham Service Centre and is currently on the EDF Renewables UK Wind Turbine Apprenticeship, said: “The apprenticeship scheme has given me a great opportunity to get my foot in the door of the growing renewable energy sector.
“I am learning so much every day and it’s fantastic to get the mix of academic and practical learning. It’s challenging mentally and physically, and has given me the unique opportunity to travel within the UK for my job and get to widen my experience.”

Camilla Home from Westruther in the Scottish Borders said: “I chose the Wind Turbine Technician Apprenticeship as I thought it was a very interesting and evolving line of work to go into; and I liked the fact that I would be able to enjoy the outdoors whilst still working. This will also provide me with many opportunities to move about the country as my career within EDF advances.”

Piero Maggio, Asset Operations Director at EDF Renewables UK, said: “From day one, our apprentices are an important part of our company and we’re passionate about offering this important entry route for those wanting to embark on a career within renewable energy. We’ve gained an incredible amount from our existing apprentices and it has been great to see them go from strength to strength and give them such a fantastic start to their career.”

In addition to apprenticeships, EDF Renewables UK is also looking to safeguard the pipeline of new talent into the industry by creating a number of roles on its Commercial graduate and Engineering graduate schemes. From wind farms to solar, to the developing technology of hydrogen, graduates have the unique opportunity to contribute to projects that will have a huge impact on the UK’s net zero ambitions.
San Johal, Chief People Officer at EDF Renewables UK, said: “There’s never been a more exciting time to start a career within renewables so we’re delighted to be broadening our apprenticeship offer to include new areas of our business in addition to creating a number of graduate roles.

“New recruits will have the opportunity to learn about the latest cutting-edge technologies, before applying that knowledge in real-world scenarios, working on-site alongside our established teams and learning from some of the best in the business.”
