An apprentice’s story
Andrew Armstrong is a wind turbine technician in the Scottish Borders with EDF Renewables. He began his career with us as a Wind Turbine Technician Apprentice. We caught up with him to understand how an apprentice scheme in a business that is committed to his development, launched his career in renewables.
Apprentices’ update: The first six months
It’s nearly six months since our latest cohort of apprentices began their training programme. Jenny Howard is Development Manager for EDF Renewables and was one of the first people to join the Irish team. A chartered engineer by trade, Jenny’s attention to detail and love for building relationships led her to develop a career in the project management side of renewables – and she’s never looked back.

Aoife O’Keeffe is Senior Planning Project Manager for our new team in Ireland. She’s been hooked on renewables ever since she saw her first wind turbine. After receiving a degree in Geography – and then an MSc in Environmental Sustainability – Aoife has spent her career developing projects in all areas of renewables, including wave, tidal, wind, solar and battery storage.

Mel Shanker is committed to the energy transition and is passionate about the role that legal services, good governance and compliance can play in achieving Net Zero. She’s General Counsel and Company Secretary of Pivot Power, part of EDF Renewables, and is a key member of the management team delivering on Pivot Power’s strategy to unlock two fundamental aspects of the energy transition: energy storage for system flexibility and electrified transportation.
