EDF Renewables UK and Ireland has built one of the largest operational battery storage project in Europe at our West Burton B CCGT power station in Nottinghamshire. The site’s 49 MW capacity enables the UK Grid to respond to fluctuations in demand for electricity in less than 0.5 seconds. Storage sites like this will help the UK develop a low-carbon energy, mix, as renewables can be integrated more easily.

The innovative battery storage project in the UK is another example of EDF Group’s global CAP 2030 strategy to lead the transition to a low carbon energy future.

West Burton Storage

West Burton B Battery Storage is a project built by EDF Renewables UK and Ireland that is co-located with the West Burton B combined-cycle gas plant in Nottinghamshire. This is one of the largest battery storage projects in Europe. In this project, on behalf of Nidec, EDF Store & Forecast provided the energy management system (EMS) that autonomously controls the battery to optimize performance and meet all technical requirements set by National Grid.
